Artist-in-environment
Laura Soisalon-Soininen is an artist who works primarily with materials from nature, combining them with techniques from sowing, weaving and crocheting. Laura has been working with the soil and agriculture, thinking of the carbon emissions of human activities.
“My process is time consuming; I want to concentrate on the places where I dwell. I do long walks taking in the landscape and letting my body absorb the environment. The places I have stayed, create layers of presence and ultimately a kind of layered space that then gets condensed into thinking and knowledge.”
In Ii Laura continues her work on the experiences of the environment. She will be walking and wondering, then counting and measuring things related to walking. Taking her body through the process of physical routines, eventually creating a spiritual sense of presence, will then be formed into artistic ideas and practises.
Laura is interested in the Northern landscape, especially in the patchwork of rivers of our area. Her family has roots in Lapland.
Laura will be staying in the KulttuuriKauppila residency until the end of the year.
