Applications
KulttuuriKauppila's call for residency periods will close for 2025 on January 31st. Thank you for applying!
KulttuuriKauppila Art Centre, located in the municipality of Ii in Northern Finland, offers three residency programmes that allow artists to explore and develop their artistic practice, collaborate with locals and get inspired by the surrounding environment. The residency is located in an idyllic cultural heritage site by the river Iijoki and we are surrounded by an active village community.
The fully furnished residency space includes two private rooms with a shared studio space and a kitchen, making it comfortable for individual artists as well as artist groups. The location is far enough from traffic for peace and quiet, yet near enough to public transportation, so that the cultural events in Oulu may be reached conveniently. We encourage the guests to travel by land whenever possible. The duration of the stay can vary between one and six months. The residency fee depends on the number of guests and reserved rooms.
RESIDENCY PROGRAMS AND APPLICATION PROCESS
Artists as well as curators and researchers of all disciplines are welcome to apply to the KulttuuriKauppila residency programmes. The KulttuuriKauppila Artist-in-Residence programme (KK AiR) offers artists a unique environment to focus on their artistic practice and research. The KulttuuriKauppila Artist-in-Community programme (KK AiC) hosts socially engaged art projects that give the artists an opportunity to work with the surrounding community and co-operate with relevant local actors. The KulttuuriKauppila Artist-in-Environment (KKAiE) invites artists with a special interest in nature, landscape and the environment. We are especially interested in projects that deal with solastagia, ie. emotional or existential distress caused by environmental change.
The residency will be tailored for each artist or artist group according to their own project plan. We are happy to facilitate interaction with the local community, but with keeping a keen eye on the current regulations of social interaction. On the application form the applicants may let us know about their interests, such as having an exhibition or hosting a master class. The events can also be arranged online.
