Satu Kalliokuusi is an artist specialized in ecological and environmental art. Her focus is in the North and the vulnerable northern landscape. Along her long career as an artist, she has also worked as a curator and producer as well as developed the field of art and artists employment, for example from the position of vice-president of the Helsinki Artists Association.
“I identify as a sort of activist. I wish to draw attention to circumstances that are not entirely equal and issues that need to be addressed. Nature needs our attention and it needs to our advocacy.”
In Ii Satu is working on an exhibition about the forest using natural pigments and materials from nature. She is also working with her colleague Reetta Gröhn-Soininen, on an environmental art work commissioned for the Rokua Geopark environmental art trail in Utajärvi.
You can meet Satu in Kulttuurikoti Salmela in Huoviskylä, Ii, on Wednesday 25th October 6 pm, in an artist meeting with Sanna Koivisto.
On Friday 27th October from 12-4 pm. Satu will host a workshop in KulttuuriKauppila, where participants work on nature-based materials.
