Maryna Sokolenko is an ukrainian artist now living in Tampere. Her works are depictions of people, events and landscapes reenacted with dolls and costumes in different surroundings. She also works with video and performance. Her art delicately comments on topical events like war and environmental catastrophes, but also historical events.
When Maryna came to Ii, the news of the destruction of the Kahovka dam reached her. “These two rivers, the Dnepr and the River Ii, can be seen as parallel environments, the other in a peaceful corner in Europe the other in a war zone.”
Marynas works conceptualize feelings of solastalgia ie. emotional or existential distress caused by environmental change. The process helps us deal with the trauma of environmental change with the means of art. She is working within the KulttuuriKauppila artist-in-environment program.
In Ii Maryna produces installations in a new rural environment. She is pratly working with her daughter Eva. She is looking forward to presenting Ukrainian midsummer traditions to the people in Ii.
