Kevin Ling (HKG) 5/2019

The work of Kevin Ling concerns community relationships, connection and a sense of curiosity.

Through community-based research and material exploration, the work of Ling Chung-wan Kevin aims to create the simplest resonance. An alternative perspective towards urban elements can be found in Ling’s work. The works often concern community relationships, connection and a sense of curiosity. Not bound by medium, in the past Ling’s interdisciplinary work has included, for example, moving images, sculpture, drawing and photography.

Hong Kong–based Ling studied visual arts at the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University. He completed the Bangkok Biennial 2018 – BangMod Canal International Art Project in Communities (BCiAPC) in 2018 and was awarded the Tuna Prize at the AVA BA Graduation Exhibition in 2017.

During his residency period at KulttuuriKauppila, Ling lead workshops in material exploration based on Chinese traditions for the students of the local art school and held an outdoor exhibition Stone showcasing his sculptures. Stone was an exhibition about light and nature and the feeling between Ii and Hong Kong.

”The stone sculpture series was inspired by the environment of Ii. The organic space and nature is a different view compare to Hong Kong, where I belong to. The sun and river is much closer and reachable. The light is always on,” Ling says.
