This summer KulttuuriKauppila Art Centre brings to Ii Arja Renell’s exhibition Pinnan alla – Below the surface, which tells about the Talvivaara/Terrafame mine from the perspective of local residents, activists, fishermen and fish.

The Talvivaara/Terrafame mine in Sotkamo has caused the largest-scale ecocide in the history of Finnish mining. The wastewaters leaked from the mine have caused permanent damage to several lakes and rivers and the mine continuously creates more wastewater than it is possible to store and treat at the site. Pumping the wastewater through a discharge pipe to Nuasjärvi and in the future possibly Oulujärvi is seen as a permanent solution.

Through her work, Renell illuminates how complex the issues of ecological balance are, and how the actions of humans always have unforeseen consequences. Questions of how we should live in relation to our environment in a rapidly changing ecosystem, for which humans are responsible, are strongly present in her work.
