Scotland-based artist George Ridgway’s practice is deeply intertwined with how we relate to expanded notions of place and their ecological webs. Using predominantly combinations of painting, three-dimensional objects, sound, music and performance, he creates forms of generative storytelling, utilising enigmatic tools and quasi-functional environments.
Ridgway’s current practice is focused on creating systems of meaning that communicate alternative forms of orientation, interconnectedness and intimacy, questioning anthropocentric and patriarchal structures of understanding and intuition. He has held several exhibitions internationally and is also the founder of WITHKIN, a platform for ecological discussion with the arts and rural living.
Ridgway’s residency period is part of the North AiR: Expanding Entanglements residency pilot of the Scottish Sculpture Workshop (SSW), Taigh Chearsabhagh and Timespan from Scotland and Mustarinda, Bioart Society and KulttuuriKauppila Art Centre from Finland. The residency programme supported by the Finnish Institute in London aims to reconsider conventional artist exchange models and question the role of artists’ residency in this time of climate breakdown.
